What we teach for self defense goes way beyond what people typically expect from self defense instruction. Our self defense program goes well beyond just the fighting part and we cover the mental and emotional aspects as well as the physical.  We actually discuss important life lessons for participants to learn that benefit them outside of a self defense situation, in their everyday lives.

“Everyone can and should learn to successfully defend themselves.” says Sensei Keyes. When teaching self defense, these skills can also easily be applied to over-come bullying, which is a constant problem within our local schools.  It’s hard to talk about sometimes, but every kid we asked has seen it or been a victim of it.  It’s not a question of ‘will’ you need to defend yourself it’s ‘When’. These days everyone is going to have to defend themselves on some level at some point. Whether it’s a violent situation or bullying in school or in the work place.  Everyone should be able to stand up for themselves and defend themselves.


During our self defense units we hear stories from young boys and girls that have already been exposed to dangerous situations.  We hear these stories from kids every time we teach self defense, no matter where we go and Fairport was no exception.  There are some scary things that our kids are exposed to right here in Fairport.  It’s important to realize that these are skills kids need to learn.

Although the statistics are scary, we focus on and reinforce the positive characteristics that we want our kids to have that will enable them to defend themselves successfully. Sensei Keyes’ ability to focus on and incorporate positive, healthy life choices with extremely effective self defense techniques has made him the top self defense instructor in the Rochester area.

We received incredible feedback from teachers and students alike from this self defense unit.  ”What you have done for our kids is more than you may know.” says Coach McCarthy, a PE teacher at Martha Brown.  Other teachers commented about how excited the kids were after each class and that we really made a huge impact in a short amount of time.

Sensei Keyes first taught self defense in Victor about ten years ago, when he returned to the United States to resume teaching martial arts, the teachers at Victor once again contacted him to teach a self defense unit as required curriculum within the school.  We have put together a really amazing self defense unit here in Victor that we have been running for a few years now and each year it gets better.  The teachers in the Victor schools are true professionals, they are excited about teaching this unit and understand the importance of what we are teaching.

From the very first day, we worked on introducing karate club members to martial arts techniques as well as important life skills such as focus, courtesy & respect which we always incorporate into our lessons. The result was a club where the children excelled, learning important life skills and having a blast all at the same time!  

Kime Karate was asked to run the Fairport Karate Club at Brooks Hill based on our reputation for professionalism, quality martial arts instruction and unmatched ability to teach important life skills. And we heard from so many parent’s through-out the club how impressed they were with our instruction and how well their kids listened and applied what we talked about at home!

This seminar introduced the participants to the different forms of martial arts practiced at Kime Karate. Sensei Aric Keyes led the warm up which included drills and exercises from both the Martial Fit and the Cardio Kickboxing classes. Sensei Paul Gardner, an Instructor of Aikido, discussed the importance of balance and led some exercises that demonstrated how a positive thought and attitude can affect posture and movement. He also taught some throws and wrist locks.

Professor John, an instructor of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, emphasized the importance of technique and the use of technique over ‘muscling’ an opponent. He taught a takedown and a guillotine choke as standing defense, an escape and a reversal from mount, as well as wrist and shoulder locks from different positions.

Sensei Keyes then led a Karate drill involving punches, kicks, elbows, knees and a head butt. This drill, as well as the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu idea of always having a back-up plan, reminded me of what Sensei Keyes always says in the self defense classes. “The longer you fight the closer you are to winning.”

I think each of these martial arts have lessons and attributes that contribute to self defense ideals. Each session of the seminar displayed attributes that were unique to the individual martial art while also showing the ties and relationship between these martial arts and how each form can be used to strengthen one another.

Which is one of the many social skills we teach here.

The kids showed great perseverance in finding the eggs. It took 25 minutes for them to find all of the eggs and everyone had a great time!  The eggs were filled with chocolate and two of the eggs had special prize tickets for the biggy eared chocolate bunnies.  Special congratulations to Keegan and Lena for finding the prize ticket eggs, which were the last eggs to be found!  I hope everyone enjoyed their chocolate!

Obviously the work of Leprechauns!

We enlisted the help of children to help catch these mischievous little green guys.  We created traps to try and capture them, which I have to say were brilliantly designed and ornately decorated by the children.  Although we did not actually catch any Leprechauns, our efforts were not entirely unsuccessful! Believing we proved that it must have indeed been Leprechauns in fact creating the nuisance, it appears we at least must have scared them away with our efforts to catch them.

Thank you very much to the kids who helped us try and catch them!

NAGA (North American Grappling Association) puts on the largest grappling and submission tournaments in the world. You can always count on having tough competitors from all over the states.

Guybson’s win is very impressive, even though he makes it look easy. Guybson is a tough competitor and he adds this Championship Belt to his long list of accomplishments and trophies including previous NAGA Championships and 5 World Championships!

Performing in front of people is a great way for children to boost their confident!  Whether it’s martial arts they are performing or some other hidden talent, our goal at Kime Karate is to bring out the best in every child.

Participants were voted on by the other participants to decide the winner. There was very tough competition, with the winner decided by only one vote!

Kime Karate is a wonderful community school where students are encouraged to participate in community service and charity events as part of their ongoing training.  Martial arts is more than physical conditioning, it can effect every part of our lives in extremely powerful ways.  We believe that martial arts training should positively affect not only those training, but those around them as well.

Helping our community and giving back through various community events and charities is a great way our students learn that they can make a difference.  When we all pull together to help one another, we all benefit.  Volunteering and donating is a great way have a positive impact on our community.  Not to mention it is a great feeling to know that something you have done will benefit someone else.

We are the community martial arts school and we believe in working towards the betterment of the people around us.  Improving the community, one black belt at a time.

Zielinksi having served half of his tour in Afghanistan got to make a surprise visit home to spend time with his family and watch his son get promoted. It was definitely an extra special night for everyone at Kime Karate and especially for their family, which is back together for the first night in 6 months.  It was a great opportunity for everyone to thank just one of the people giving up a lot to serve their country.
